Review: Tomi Ungerer, a Multifaceted Artist (Strasbourg)

Posted on October 17, 2011 by Anna Denise - 30 comments
This weekend, Ashwin took me on a surprise trip to Strasbourg. I had been there before as a teenager, with my parents, but Ashwin had never been and with the weather looking good, he decided to book us some last minute train tickets and a hotel room in this very European city. Now, I'll probably tell you all about the rest of the trip on my personal blog, but today I'd like to share with you a review of an exhibition of Tomi Ungerer's work.

Tomi Ungerer is a French illustrator born in Strasbourg, who did most of his work while living in New York (I think he's back in Strasbourg now, not sure). In 2007, the Tomi Ungerer Museum in Strasbourg was opened in honor of this living legend and we decided the pay the museum a visit.

The museum is not very large, but it's an absolutely gorgeous building. Light, white, and with a fun little sculpture garden out front. The works inside were carefully displayed and the accompanying texts were concise and informative. The exhibition on display was called Tomi Ungerer, a Multifaceted Artist, and boy, what an apt title that was.

0) BOOKS, TOYS, AND THE THREE ROBBERS
The ground floor of the museum was dedicated to Ungerer's toy collection and children's books drawings. I loved that the museum showed both the inspiration behind his works, his sketchbooks and the sketches that led up to the final works and published books. I don't believe I've ever owned one of his books as a kid, but his style definitely rang a bell and reminded me of some of the books my dad grew up reading (and passing onto us). Colorful, witty, but with an edge. On this floor, we also saw a selection of tv cartoons that Ungerer made, my favorite being the 'Three Robbers'. LOVE those sound effects.

1) SHARP SATIRE, BUTTS, AND BEANS
The first floor (or second, if you're American) showed some of Ungerer's more commercial and controversial work. Among the brilliantly executed anti-Vietnam war posters and Bonduelle vegetable commercials, we also saw a series of 'erotic' jewelry he designed and a series of designs for playground buildings and public bathrooms (my favorite being a square building with a giant butt on top it).

-1) FROGS AND THE DARK SIDE
It was in the basement (where else?) that we began to understand the true meaning behind the 'multifaceted' aspect of Ungerer's work as we encountered a warning that the images we were about to see weren't suitable for a younger audience. A series of sketchbooks on SM prostitutes, another series of frogs having sex with not only each other but with objects and plants ('the joy of frogs', the series was called - it really was kind of funny) and an entire room full of mangled Barbie dolls being molested by animals and other crazy creatures. Multifaceted, yes, definitely. Personally, if I were a children's book author still alive and publishing, I would have left my molested Barbie dolls hidden in the back of that closet, but perhaps I'm being too prudish. I'm not against some good erotic art every now and then (and the frogs were hilarious), but I suppose the violence of it kind of threw me off after seeing the children's book drawings. That, or I'm clearly still not over the trauma of that one time when the neighborhood bully burnt the face off my favorite Barbie doll.
All in all though, the exhibition and museum were very inspiring! I absolutely loved Ungerer's children's books drawings, the movies, and the whole presentation. I really feel I've learned more about the artist, his inspirations, and the way he works. The museum was a pleasant space to spend some time in, also because people were hanging out everywhere with their sketchbook in hand. Even the guard upstairs was doing a little sketch whilst keeping an eye on us. If you're in Strasbourg, and you're not familiar with Ungerer's work, I'd recommend going, but yeah... keep your little ones out of the crazy Barbie-room, hehe.

Craft Mondays: How to Linocut in Stop-Motion

Posted on May 30, 2011 by Anna Denise - 23 comments
Hiya folks!

As you might have noticed, I was out last week vacationing my butt off in the marvelous city of Belgrade. Honestly, it was absolutely awesome and I promise to blog about it on my personal blog asap. Other than that, I sincerely hope you missed me, because, you know... what else do I keep this blog if not for your recognition and everlasting fandom. Personal fulfillment and inspiration are so overrated.

Anyways, after posting this beautiful stop motion video, Willow Hewitt, emailed me a link to a How to video she just posted on how to create a linocut! So fascinating and I can't think of a better way to start Craft Mondays! Thank you Willow!

Craft Mondays: Blogger Paint Sample Projects

Posted on May 16, 2011 by Anna Denise - Seventeen comments

I absolutely ADORE paint samples and often sneak in and out of hardware stores to get some to use in my art journal and mood boards. So, today, some simple ideas on what else you can do with those sweet, multifunctional, color cards!

I came across this idea on Pinterest and after some detective work, I found it on Brooke's Grace and Light blog. I love this idea because it's so very simple and original. Kind of like paperclips, but prettier. Link: Paper Punch Garland Tutorial

This one is a little more complicated (eek! rulers!), but I think if you're a designer or artist, this awesome card holder made out of paint sample chips will really leave an impression with your fellow minglers. Bravo for DesignVerb! Link: Paint Chip Card Holders Tutorial

And finally... yeah. I know. This one looks exhausting to me too, but it's so so so pretty I might just consider quitting my job, buying a house (still need to work out the order/financial plan behind these two steps), and recreating this look in my bedroom. I am sure my boyfriend will be thrilled. Found on Design*Sponge (where else?). Link: DIY Idea: Paint Strip Wall Decoration

Alrighty! Enjoy your Monday! Hope it'll be a colorful day for you!

Craft Mondays: Art From Every Day Objects by Evie S.

Posted on April 11, 2011 by Anna Denise - Eigthteen comments
Happy Monday everyone!

I hope you all had an amazing weekend. Mine was very relaxing and fun with a long walk through the forest, coffee and website building with a friend, and some light DIY'ing. Nothing blog-worthy, though, it seems I mostly just like playing around without ever actually finishing a project. But, you know, I think playing around is very underrated. After all, isn't that what creativity is all about - and not necessarily the end-result? We can't all be Martha Steward, you know (I know I'm not). Anyways, while I was looking for fun projects to work on without having to do much shopping - I remembered this amazing series blogger and crafter extrordinaire Evie S. started up a while ago: Art From Every Day Objects. For the entire month of February, she created amazing pieces of art from ordinary objects - like these amazing matchstick arrows: If you missed the series, you can check it out here. There's much more to discover, like these amazing paperclip and string earrings.

Craft Mondays: My Cup of Tea

The past few days I've been longing for vintage teacups to spruce up our house a bit. I am pretty sure the boyfriend is going to object (he's not into 'stuff'), but when I turn it into a DIY project, I'm sure he won't dare say anything (for at least a week). So I've picked out some teacup DIY projects I found online! Woo!

* I absolutely adore this DIY teacup cake topper by Ruffled Blog, although I must admit it took me a while to spot the cake underneath the topper, so I think I'll turn this into a table center piece.

* Great idea by Re-Nest for turning teacups into wine glasses. I've always been much more into wine than into tea, but tea cups are prettier, so I guess this is the perfect solution to that.

* I've seen this idea around before, but I love the great, simple instructions for creating teacup candles on Design*Sponge (they really have the best tutorials, don't they).

*This isn't any kind of tutorial, but I love the little succulent garden this girl created in some old teacups. Great idea and easy too, me thinks.

I'll let you know if I ended up doing any of these and how it turned out!

Craft Mondays: From Glove to Chipmunk

Posted on March 22, 2011 by Anna Denise - Seventeen comments
I absolutely adore Pinterest, but it annoys me to no end when people don't link to the original sources of the images that they're posting. It's like Tumblr where you can keep clicking and clicking through for ages, but somehow the original source never really is the original source. Ugh!

Anyways, with some smart googling, I did find the original link to this amazing tutorial by Miyako Kanamori on the Etsy blog: how to make a chipmunk from a glove! So cute right? It's one of the tutorials from Kanamori's book 'Happy Gloves'. Links: Tutorial on Etsy | Website | Amazon Bookshop

PS: Yes I do realize it's Tuesday.

Craft Mondays: St. Patrick's Day on the Blogs

St. Patrick's Day is coming up! Yay! For us mainland Europeans, the holiday isn't a given, so just a quick word of explanation. I first came across the St. Patrick's Day celebration when I was living in California, where the originally religious fest was celebrated mainly by dressing in green and consuming large amounts of Guinness. St. Patrick's is a traditionally Irish Catholic holiday, "Saint Paddy" being regarded as the patron saint of Ireland. It is, however, widely celebrated across the Irish communities worldwide and New York now hosts the largest Saint Patrick's Day parade anywhere! People generally dress in green, wear shamrock accessories and celebrate 'Irishness' of any kind.

So, as I will be celebrating this St. Patrick's Day in New York this year, I've done my research and found some awesome DIY St. Paddy ideas! Here are some of my go-to blogs:

Craft Mondays: Style Me Pretty

Posted on February 21, 2011 by Anna Denise - One comment
Sorry for being so quiet these past few days. I had a fun-filled weekend, but it has left me wondering which one of the lovely dinners is responsible for the nasty food poisoning symptoms I'm currently experiencing. Bggh. So, just a quick blog post then.

I'd like to tell you all about this great blog I just 'discovered' called Style Me Pretty. No, I have not suddenly become obsessed with weddings or marriage or softly lit pictures (although they never hurt), but I know a TON of people who are just a tad bit on the compulsive side. This blog is good news for them. No more buying lame (sorry) wedding magazines. Style Me Pretty has great DIY ideas that can be used for regular parties as well. Like these amazing pinwheels. Enjoy!

Now, if you'll excuse me - me and my bathroom seem to have some unfinished business.
